Top 10 food heroes

As well as recognising East Yorkshire’s top food and drink producers, many of the cafes, pubs and restaurants in the area have won regional and national awards and accolades. So here are some of the top food heroes, from a Michelin starred restaurant to award winning takeaways, from local artisan produce to food and drink tours, you’re sure to find the best foodie experiences in East Yorkshire. 

 

1. Award Winning Fish and Chips 

Nothing says seaside holiday like great British fish and chips, whether you enjoy them from a lovely sea view restaurant or wrapped in paper, warm in your hands as you sit on the beach and watch the waves roll in. Haddock, cod, fish cakes, patties and scraps are all part of the traditional offering from our award-winning fish and chip shops Lighthouse Fisheries and Whiteheads Fish and Chip Shop across East Yorkshire but with such stunning coastline on our doorstep our seafood offering goes far beyond that too.

 

2. Bridlington Bay Seafood 

Fresh seafood is a local speciality and is definitely a real taste of East Yorkshire. The crab and lobster landed in Bridlington and along our coast is not only enjoyed locally but is so special that it is shipped to restaurants around the world, so make sure you try some whilst you are here.  Did you know that lobster from Bridlington Bay, on the East Yorkshire coast, is harvested responsibly, pot-caught, using traditional methods by the local fishing fleet and widely exported, earning Bridlington Bay the reputation of the largest lobster port in Europe.  Bridlington Bay seafood can be found in fishmongers such as Arnolds Fisheries, right on Bridlington Harbour, delis and farm shops in East Yorkshire.

3. Staal Smokehouse

Winner of the REYTAs local producer, offer a delicious selection of award-winning hand-smoked artisan products are ideal for creating mouth-watering meals - their hampers make perfect gifts, and the selection boxes are great for easy entertaining the family. Local deliveries are free, or orders can be collected in person from the Smokehouse. They produce a truly unique product which truly does enhance the area.

 

4. Laurel Vines Vineyard and Winery

Finalist of the REYTAs local producer and winner of the REYTAs Remarkable Ethical, Responsible and Sustainable award are a low carbon, low environmental impact vineyard with a winery on site. They are very enthusiastic about all things wine and were featured in the Hairy Bikers Go North series, not to mention even going as far to get an electric tractor. They produce incredible wine, make scrumptious picnics, and do fascinating winery tours onsite.

 

5. Soanes Poultry

Finalist of the REYTAs local producer and multi award winning chicken makes a real Yorkshire difference to a family meal in when on holiday and can be found in many of the delis and farm shops in East Yorkshire. Soanes is a family owned business, operating for over 70 years, producing the finest quality BCR and Red Tractor accredited poultry.

 

6. Yorkshire Wolds Apple Juice Co

Finalist of the REYTAs local producer and multi award winning producer, are definitely on the local hero list for their fabulously fresh juices. Their traditional cold pressed juice is a treat for the whole family and can be bought in a number of East Yorkshire cafes, pubs, restaurants, shops and farmers markets.

7. Highfield

Winner and finalist in the REYTAs, has a fantastic restaurant menu which shows their love of food and is keenly focused on grown locally, foraged and seasonally sourced produce, not to mention a fabulously indulgent selection of Yorkshire cocktails and themed foodie events.

 

8. Drewtons and Balloon Tree 

With Drewtons taking home a win and Balloon Tree coming in with the Highly Commended for the REYTAs Cuppa award, both deserve a visit, whether it’s for their fine afternoon tea, delightful selection of sandwiches, or naughty but nice puddings, all in beautiful surroundings. Both sites are complete with their own farm shops selling locally sourced produce.

 

9. Pipe and Glass

This Michelin starred restaurant is a must for any occasion with a lovely country pub atmosphere, great service, and really tasty locally sourced food. Previously a coaching inn, the Pipe and Glass still holds many parts dating back to the 17th century. For those looking for somewhere to celebrate a special occasion try the exclusive private dining suite complete with bespoke tasting menus.
