AboutIn 1909, there was a world premiere in Bridlington; the first performance by the Bridlington Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (BAODS). The production was the Yeoman of the Guard and with applause ringing in their ears, the company never looked back from that opening night.
Throughout the early years, the BAODS led a nomadic existence performing wherever they could from the grand surroundings of the Spa Opera House to the less glamorous halls of local leisure centres and schools.
Then in 2000, the society purchased its own space, a former print works, on West Street - not quite the West End but still their very own bit of theatreland.
The intimate Spotlight is now Bridlington's favourite little venue and is the permanent home of the BAODS. Alongside their talented amateur company, professional touring shows perform to enthusiastic audiences all year round. Locals and holiday makers alike pack the auditorium for music gigs, dramas, full-blown musicals and the legendary annual panto.
Spotlight has been a huge success story and new development has created a multi-functional space for rehearsals and community activity. Facilities for both performers and visitors have also been improved, plus easier access for the less mobile.
In addition to this Live Streaming is now available, meaning that opera, ballet and drama productions from world famous companies can be seen in all their glory. So from Gilbert and Sullivan via Rodgers and Hammerstein and through to Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, the Spotlight has become an important part of life in the town - a hit that looks set to run and run.
