About

Wassand Hall is a fine Regency House in beautiful tranquil surroundings between Seaton and Hornsea on the B1244, approximately 12 miles east of Beverley, 18 miles north of Hull. The Estate has been in one family ownership since 1530 and enjoys beautiful walled gardens, woodland walk and half-mile park walk with views of Hornsea Mere which belongs to the Estate.

The Hall contains a collection of 18th and 19th century paintings and portraits of past owners of Wassand Hall and their relations; a collection of English and European silver, furniture and porcelain from the same period.

The house, gardens and parks are open on selected days during the summer, when teas are available in the fine conservatory in Wassand's beautifully planted walled gardens.

Walks at Wassand

Visitors to Wassand Hall can enjoy walks through the estate's beautiful park land. The Woodland Walk starts near the car park, going past a small lake, through an avenue of newly planted Norwegian Maple trees and then between two paddocks into a small wood, ending up by the Walled Gardens.

The Half Mile Walk is a park walk trough pretty glades with open areas giving splendid vistas of the house and Hornsea Mere.
The Bird Hide Walk Starts at the Car Park and goes along a public footpath and then through an ancient wood to Hornsea Mere. The Hide provides excellent vistas across the Mere with a great richness of waterfowl and birds.

The Bird Hide, entrance to which is included in the All Day ticket, is open throughout the year (see details) to members of the Wassand Wildlife Society, closed only on Christmas Day.

Gardens at Wassand

The walled gardens were probably established in the sixteenth century - parts of the wall being Tudor - and records show that throughout the centuries they were used to supply the main house with fresh vegetables, fruits and flowers. The Walled Gardens have been recently restored - to a design created by Charles Mitchell - and in 2000 a summer house was built in the second garden, using reclaimed materials from the Estate. Teas and light refreshments may be purchased here on open days.

The first garden features pleached lime trees enclosing a central lawn, in the middle of which is a fountain. Surrounding the lawn are beds planted with traditional roses, which can be enjoyed in full bloom during the month of June. These is also a herb garden and borders providing colour and interest all season.

The second walled garden is the kitchen garden with beds of vegetables and fruit trees, as well as more formal features - box hedges, pond and other water features.

The gardens encircling Wassand Hall feature sweeping lawns and beds of roses, lavender and other plants, with views of Hornsea Mere and the surrounding parks and farm land.
