When lobster is in season

Lobster from the East Yorkshire coast is available for much of the year, but landings naturally rise and fall with the seasons. Here’s what to expect throughout the year.

Spring (April to May): the season begins

Lobster availability starts to increase in April and May, when warmer weather brings lobsters closer to shore. Spring is often one of the best times of year to buy lobster, as quality is high and catches begin to rise before summer demand peaks.

Summer (June to September): peak season

Summer is when lobster is most abundant. On the East Yorkshire coast, the main landing season runs from July to September, when conditions are ideal and local catches are at their highest. If you’re buying from a fishmonger or ordering in a restaurant, summer offers the best chance of finding freshly landed Bridlington Bay lobster.

Autumn (October): still good availability

Availability generally remains steady into early autumn, however, supply gradually becomes more variable as the weather changes.

Winter (November to March): much lower landings

Native lobster is still available in winter, but in much smaller quantities. Catches decrease because lobsters move further offshore during the colder months, and rougher seas reduce fishing opportunities. If you’re planning a winter dish, it’s always worth checking with your local fishmonger to see what’s recently been landed.
