Race the Waves takes place in Bridlington, with race days at Bridlington South Beach Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September 10am-5pm. The town is expected to be very busy during this weekend, and we would advise planning your journey to make the most out of your visit.

 

Getting there

By Public Transport (Recommended)

We strongly advise you to travel to the event via public transport. Bridlington has excellent transport links via both train and bus into the town centre. Bridlington bus station is a 15-minute walk to the event centre on the seafront and served by routes from surrounding villages such as Flamborough and Bempton, as well as further afield Scarborough, Hull and York. Check the East Yorkshire Motor Services website for up-to-date timetables.

Bridlington Railway Station is also central to the town and a 15 minute walk to the main event area. The station is served by regular trains from Scarborough, Driffield, Beverley, Hull and beyond. Please check the national rail website for travel times.

 

By car

Thousands of people travel by car to East Yorkshire for the Race the Waves event. East Yorkshire is well sign posted along all major routes, with the M62 bringing you into the county. Bridlington can be reached by major A roads from Hull, Beverley, Scarborough and Driffield as well as from further afield York and Leeds.

The following road closures will be in place:

Church Green and Kirkgate, Old Town, Bridlington: Friday 11st September, 6am-7pm.

South Marine Drive: Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September, 7am -7pm.

 

Bridlington park and ride

We recommend using the Bridlington Park and Ride at South Cliff car park. The car park leads straight to the seafront promenade which you can walk along to the event, or you can catch the park and ride bus to the Harbour Top (South Cliff Road above the harbour) and then walking along the promenade.

If you are using a sat nav, the postcode for the Park and Ride is YO15 3QN. Located on the south side of Bridlington, access is via the A1038 Kingsgate and the roundabout adjacent to the holiday park. Follow access and directional signs on the north and southern routes into Bridlington.

Additional event parking

Parking is also available at Strawberry fields carpark located on Kingsgate, YO15 3NG, a 20-minute walk to the event.  Follow Strawberry Fields carboot on Facebook for carparking information for race the waves event

Toilets

There are two sets of public toilets along Princess Mary Promenade one set close to Bridlington Spa and another close the chalets and paddling pool. There are also toilets at Bridlington South Cliff Park and Ride (YO15 3QN) and at South Cliff Gardens (YO15 3AU).

Filming and photography

Please note we will be taking photographs and filming at this event. The footage will be used for future publicity and marketing campaigns. If you have any objections, please notify the photographer/film crew on the day.

Drones

The Event Organisers have submitted a NOTAM - this means strictly no drones are to be flown in the event area. For more information on this please contact the events team on info@veyevents.co.uk

 

What to bring

Race the Waves takes place outdoors on the beach front in Bridlington so make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes to explore the promenade, and town. The event takes place during warmer months but temperatures on the coast may be slightly cooler so please check the weather forecast before travel.

  • Light layers. A cool sea breeze can feel a little chilly even in the sunshine.
  • Suncream and sun hat. Even if it feels cooler the sun is still strong at this time of year.
  • A raincoat or umbrella just in case…
  • Cash as well as card. Card facilities may be limited during busy times, and some vendors may prefer cash so it’s always best to carry both.

 

Dogs

Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome at Race the Waves. Please be mindful that the event can be busy and very loud, and we ask dog owners to consider if your dog will be happy and able to cope in the busy and noisy environment.

Keep your dog close and on a lead at all times, particularly around the car displays, live entertainment areas and other attractions. We kindly ask all visitors to act as responsible owners and clean up after their dogs to help ensure the event remains safe and enjoyable for everyone.

 

Food and drink

It’s hungry work watching the races but don’t worry there’s a fantastic selection of food and drink stalls available selling delicious takeaway hot food, sweat treats and more. If you’d prefer a sit-down meal, Bridlington’s cafes, pubs and restaurants are open throughout the day and into the evening so there’s plenty to choose from. A list of stallholders will be available nearer the time.

On Sunday 13th September Bridlington Food Festival takes place on King Street Market in the town centre, offering a vibrant selection of street food, home baked goods, locally produced beverages and more.

 

Safety

It’s important to us that you not only enjoy the event but feel safe while you’re here. Visit East Yorkshire work closely with our contractors to ensure the event is safe for everyone. Our measures include:

  • On-site security and CCTV monitoring
  • Road closures over the weekend
  • Safety barriers and Hostile Vehicle Mitigations
  • Police officers and security staff in attendance throughout the event
  • Trained medics on-site during the festival
  • We do not permit the use of drones

The event is expected to be very busy and we would suggest agreeing a meeting point at the start of the day in case you get separated.

Please note that Visit East Yorkshire Events and East Riding of Yorkshire Council are not responsible for any injury to persons and/or damage or loss of property during this event. You should ensure all your property remains with you at all times, that all children are supervised and that all dogs are kept on leads.

In the event of an emergency please follow the instructions of the emergency services, security and event staff. 

If you come across something out of the ordinary, or something doesn’t feel quite right, please let one of our event staff or marshals know as soon as possible. In the case of an emergency, dial 999 and report it to the relevant emergency services.
