In East Yorkshire, accessibility isn’t an afterthought, it’s part of what makes the region so special. Many of the area’s most popular attractions have been designed or adapted so that all visitors can explore and enjoy them with ease. From coastal promenades with inspiring sea views to welcoming museums and bustling shopping facilities, you're free to experience the charm of East Yorkshire without any barriers.

Accessible attractions and places to visit

East Yorkshire's accessible attractions combine history, culture, and of course, plenty of fun!

Standing proudly over the historic market town of Beverley, Beverley Minster is one of England’s finest Gothic churches and one of the most accessible. Level, step-free access, wide internal spaces, and smooth flooring make it easy for wheelchair users to explore the magnificent architecture. All areas included in the ground floor minster tours are accessible and a hearing loop is available for those using hearing aids. The Minster also provides wheelchair accessible toilets in the Parish Hall and nearby Blue Badge parking, ensuring everyone can enjoy its peaceful, awe-inspiring atmosphere.

Perched on the clifftops overlooking Bridlington, Sewerby Hall and Gardens offers one of the most inclusive visitor experiences in East Yorkshire. The historic house is fully accessible via a ramped entrance, and lifts provide access to the upper floors where you can explore fascinating exhibits and period rooms. Outside, the award-winning gardens feature plenty of smooth, level paths for wheelchair users and pushchairs. There are some steps around the estate, especially on the Woodland Walk where the path is surfaced with bark chippings, but alternate access routes are clearly sign-posted.

The estate also includes a small zoo with accessible viewing areas, and a Changing Places facility. Accessible parking is available close to the entrance, and staff are trained to assist visitors with additional needs.

For nature lovers, RSPB Bempton Cliffs is a must-visit accessible attraction on the East Yorkshire coast. This world-famous seabird sanctuary is home to over half a million birds during breeding season, including puffins, gannets and kittiwakes. The site has been carefully designed to be as inclusive as possible, with accessible paths and viewing platforms that allow all visitors to experience the dramatic chalk cliffs and incredible wildlife up close.

The visitor centre includes accessible toilets, a Changing Places facility, level access throughout, and a café with indoor and outdoor seating areas. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters are available to hire too.

Accessible parks and outdoor spaces

Looking for accessible parks and outdoor activities in East Yorkshire? You’ll find plenty of beautiful and inclusive places to explore across the region.

Located in the pretty market town of Pocklington, Burnby Hall Gardens is one of East Yorkshire’s most popular and accessible outdoor attractions. These award-winning gardens offer a tranquil escape filled with colour, wildlife, and history.

The gardens feature two stunning lakes that are home to the UK's national collection of hard water lilies, which bloom beautifully throughout the summer. Smooth, well-maintained paths wind around the lakes, making it easy for wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility to explore at their own pace. There are benches and seating areas throughout the gardens, offering plenty of spots to stop, relax, and take in the peaceful scenery. There's also the option to borrow a wheelchair free of charge from the visitor centre (we recommend booking in advance).

Accessible beaches in East Yorkshire

East Yorkshire’s stunning coastline offers golden sands, easy access routes, and excellent facilities for visitors with limited mobility.

Bridlington South Beach is one of the region’s best destinations for accessible seaside fun. You can easily reach the beach via wheelchair friendly ramps leading from the promenade. There are also two different types of beach wheelchairs available to hire - a sand wheelchair suitable for use along the beach and a floating wheelchair that allows visitors to safely enjoy the sea. Both types can be booked by contacting the Coastal Services Office on (01262) 678255.

RADAR key-accessible toilets are close by and you'll find a Changing Places facility on the South Promenade near the Lifeboat Station, providing a height-adjustable changing bench, hoist, and fully accessible toilet.

For a fun and easy way to explore the seafront, the South Side Land Train offers step-free access and space for a wheelchair user on its rear carriage (please note that motorised wheelchairs cannot be carried due to weight restrictions).

Further up the coast, Hornsea Beach offers a peaceful seaside experience with excellent accessibility. The long, level promenade is ideal for wheelchair users, mobility scooters, and pushchairs, with stunning views across the North Sea. The town also provides accessible parking bays close to the sea front and toilet facilities designed for disabled visitors.
