Distilleries, vineyards and breweries

East Yorkshire has a thriving drinks scene and the good news is that many of its finest producers actively welcome visitors. Whether you want to see how local ales are brewed on a family farm, take a guided tour of an award-winning whisky distillery or wander through a Yorkshire vineyard before settling in for a tasting, there are some genuinely brilliant experiences to book. Come thirsty.

Brewery tours and beer tasting experiences

East Yorkshire has a strong brewing tradition and brewery tours are a great way to see how local ales are crafted.

At Wold Top Brewery, located on a family farm in the Yorkshire Wolds, you can join a tour to learn about the brewing process from grain to glass. Their beers are made using Wolds-grown barley and chalk-filtered water from the farm, giving each brew its distinctive character. Visitors can explore the brewhouse, hear the story behind the brewery and enjoy a tasting of some of their award-winning ales.  For a deeper dive into both brewing and distilling, Wold Top Brewery also offers a combined brewery and distillery tour with nearby Spirit of Yorkshire, giving visitors the chance to experience craft beer and Yorkshire whisky in one trip. A great option if you want to make a proper day of it.

Elsewhere in the region, Old Mill Brewery offers traditional brewery tours where you can explore the brewhouse and fermentation rooms and learn how classic ales are produced.

Distillery tours, gin tastings and craft spirits

East Yorkshire is home to some excellent distillery tours and craft spirit tasting experiences which are well worth adding to your itinerary if you're interested in how great spirits are made.  At Spirit of Yorkshire, you can take a guided tour to learn how their award-winning Filey Bay whisky is produced. Explore the still house, hear about the field-to-bottle process and finish with a tasting of the distillery's whiskies. Tours run throughout the week and offer a fascinating insight into the craft of distilling.

For gin and rum lovers, Wicstun Distillery in Market Weighton offers behind-the-scenes tours with tasting sessions. You'll learn about the distilling process, meet the makers and sample a selection of their craft spirits. A relaxed and welcoming experience from a producer who clearly loves what they do.

Vineyard tours and wine tasting

You might not immediately think of Yorkshire when it comes to wine, but the region has a quietly impressive reputation for excellent vineyards and locally produced wines that's well worth discovering.

At Little Wold Vineyard, you can stroll among more than 12,000 vines and enjoy vineyard tours and wine tasting in a peaceful setting overlooking the Yorkshire countryside. Visitors can relax in the tasting room while sampling wines made from the grapes grown right in front of them - as direct a farm-to-glass experience as it gets.

Laurel Vines Vineyard and Winery also offers vineyard tours, tasting sessions and seasonal events. Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the vines and winery before settling in for a wine tasting or a vineyard picnic with views across the rolling hills of East Yorkshire.  For a full day out, Laurel Vines has teamed up with neighbouring Dumble Farm to create the wonderfully named Herd it on the Grapevine experience. This Highlands, History and Habitats tour begins with a ride on the Dumble Bus, where you'll meet the farm's characterful Highland cows and learn about the local landscape. There's a mid-way stop for coffee and homemade cake at Dumble Farm before heading over to Laurel Vines for a vineyard and winery tour around the 15,000 vines. The experience finishes with a relaxing vineyard picnic and wine tasting so allow around four to five hours to enjoy it in full.

Both Little Wold Vineyard and Laurel Vines Vineyard and Winery are part of the Yorkshire Wine Trail, which takes visitors across the whole of Yorkshire's growing wine country. A brilliant starting point for anyone who wants to explore further.

East Yorkshire's drinks scene is more varied and more ambitious than most people expect and the producers behind it genuinely love having visitors. Whether you're planning a leisurely afternoon at a vineyard or a full day taking in a brewery and distillery back to back, there's something here worth raising a glass to.
