With longer evenings, warmer temperatures and blue skies finally here (somewhat), there’s no better time to head towards the East Yorkshire coast and explore some of the best trail running routes that our region has to offer.
For those reading this and wondering “who and what is ALTUS Running?” - we’re an inclusive community Run Club based in Hull and East Yorkshire, built around bringing people together through running, whether that’s on the road, track, or out on the trails.
As part of our ongoing series with Visit East Yorkshire, we’re continuing to showcase some of our favourite places to run across the region. This time, we’re heading to the coast…
Stretching from Bridlington to Flamborough Head and passing through the iconic Bempton Cliffs along the way, this review combines everything we love about trail running, including incredible scenery, varied terrain, fresh sea air and plenty of opportunities to stop for coffee, food or a well-earned post-run drink afterwards.
Why we love coastal trail running in East Yorkshire
There’s something completely different about running by the coast. The views constantly change, the sea air gives everything a fresh energy, and no matter how many times you run the same route, it always feels slightly different depending on the weather, the season and the tide.
The Bridlington to Flamborough route is one of the most accessible coastal trail runs in East Yorkshire. You don’t need to be an experienced trail runner to enjoy it, and there are plenty of opportunities to shorten the route, stop along the way, or simply take your time and enjoy the surroundings.
One of the standout sections is undoubtedly Bempton Cliffs – one of East Yorkshire’s most famous coastal landmarks and home to some of the UK’s most recognisable wildlife.
Particularly during Spring and early Summer, the cliffs come alive with seabirds (including puffins), making it one of the most unique running experiences anywhere in our region.
For us as a Run Club, routes like this perfectly capture what running should be about; exploring new places, spending time outdoors and enjoying the experience with other people.

Our coastal trail run recommendations
Route spotlight – Bridlington to Flamborough Head
Starting in Bridlington, this route follows sections of the coastline north towards Sewerby, Bempton Cliffs and Flamborough Head, combining cliff-top trails, coastal paths and sea views throughout.
The terrain is varied enough to keep things interesting without becoming overly technical, making it suitable for everything from easy social runs through to longer endurance efforts.
Suggested route:
- Distance: Approx. 12–15km return depending on route choice
- Terrain: Coastal trails, cliff paths and compact gravel tracks
- Elevation: Rolling coastal climbs
For more details and maps for the Flamborough based trails, view the Visit East Yorkshire running page or All Trails.
Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to stop and take in some of East Yorkshire’s best coastal scenery, particularly around:
Making a day of it
One of the best things about coastal running is how easy it is to turn the run itself into a full day out. Whether that’s grabbing breakfast before setting off, stopping for coffee afterwards, or spending the afternoon exploring the coastline, there’s plenty to do around Bridlington and Flamborough beyond the miles themselves.
For runners training for spring and summer races, routes like this are also a great way to break up training routines. The rolling terrain naturally builds strength and endurance, while the scenery keeps things mentally fresh compared to repetitive road miles.

Our go-to post-run spots
No trail run is complete without a proper refuel afterwards – and luckily, the East Yorkshire coast has plenty of options worth visiting. A few of our favourites include:
- The Ship Inn at Sewerby (Cliff Rd, Sewerby, Bridlington YO15 1EW)
- A great spot for a post-run pub meal or drink.
- Blu Savannah (Sewerby Cliff Top at The Ship Inn, Cliff Rd, Sewerby, Bridlington YO15 1EW)
- Ideal for a post-run refreshment and snacks including coffee, ice-cream, and much more.
- Jerome’s Pavilion (2 Marlborough Terrace, Bridlington YO15 2PA)
- Perfect for coffee, cake or lunch with sea views nearby.
