The summer holidays are finally here and … how on earth are we going to fill them! The place to start is East Yorkshire. The region is full of fun days out, exciting activities and award-winning attractions, but sometimes it's nice to make the most of the great outdoors. Here’s some hints and tips to make a great day out in East Yorkshire that are low budget, hassle free and full of fun.

Summer + Ice Cream = Mr Moo’s

Location: Mr Moo's Ice Cream Parlour, Hornsea Road, Skipsea, YO25 8SY

A short drive from Hornsea
Mr’s Moo’s just outside of Skipsea is the ideal place to go on those days where you think 'put the kids in the car and let’s just go somewhere'. With over 30 flavours to choose from, you really are spoilt for choice. Not only is each flavour is delicious they are made from locally sourced ingredients and expertly made by the Mr Moo’s team. From a single scoop cone to a monster ice cream sundae, it’s a treat everyone enjoys, especially on a hot summer's day. Keep an eye out for the cows (and calves if you’re lucky) in the fields neighbouring the icecream parlour. From the cafe you can take the farm walk to the clifftop, where it's possible to make it down to the beach but this is very uneven due to erosion and care is needed. It’s definitely worth checking tide times before you visit as there are plenty of rockpools to explore and sand to play on at low tide.

Wide Open Spaces in on Beverley Westwood

Beverley Westwood, York Road, Beverley, HU17 9BG
Beverley is more than independent shops and interesting heritage, it's the Westwood - green space, blue skies and cows…Take a picnic, meet up with some friends or family, set up camp and let the kids (and dogs) play. Load up yummy lunches to takeaway from  Vanessa’s Delicatessen and Cafe or if you're feeling particularly indulgent try some sweet treats from 42nd East Bakehouse. Pack some outdoor play essentials like a bat and ball or frisby to keep everyone busy.

Everyday is a beach day in East Yorkshire

East Yorkshire coast and beaches
One of the easiest fuss free days out is a trip to the beach. All you need is towels, suncream and a bucket and spade… oh and yourselves of course. Turned up on spec? Don’t worry you can still pick up these essentials on the seafront - you can even hire deck chairs in Bridlington for a more comfortable experience. At Bridlington you can park at the park and ride then either go straight down to the beach there or ride into town, by bus or - a summer favourite - by Landtrain, and pick a spot nearer the town centre. There’s so much space that even at the busiest times there's space to set up your own base. Hornsea is very similar in terms of big sandy beaches, it’s lovely to stroll along the front, there’s also a large grassed area near the boat launch which is perfect for a kick about. Withernsea is further down the East Yorkshire coast, and although it’s a smaller resort it doesn't feel that way on the spacious beaches and pleasant promenades. Avid beach goers can hire chalets in Bridlington and Hornsea, giving you the option for long beach days and an ideal base camp. Take a picnic if you fancy but fish and chips, icecreams and other seaside treats are aplenty and keep everyone full for a day full of sandcastle building, paddling, beach games and sunbathing.

Cool off in the countryside

Some days it’s simply too hot and a great way to combat this? Visit the local woods and parks in East Yorkshire. With the trees and vegetation in full bloom there’s plenty of shade while still having the space to explore and the refreshing feeling of being out in the great outdoors. Walking along woodland paths lined with wild flowers, and cowslip, with tree branches overhead soon gives the feeling of another world and is perfect for those kids that love an expedition. From Millington Woods in the Yorkshire Wolds, to Humber Bridge Country Park leading down to Hessle Foreshore, and Danes Dyke with the perfect balance of woodland and beach, there’s plenty of choice. It’s great to just head out and see where the day takes you, again picnics are a must here but take the hassle out prepping and stop somewhere local on the way to pick up something freshly made and delicious - visit the food and drink pages of our website for ideas.
