Beverley is the perfect destination for dog parents looking to explore charming cobbled streets, stunning countryside, and a host of pet-friendly spots. Whether you’re exploring its independent shops, savouring the local food scene, or soaking in its tranquil green spaces, the town offers a warm welcome to visitors and their furry friends.
Saturday morning
Saturday Market
Kick off your Saturday morning with a browse around Beverley’s Saturday Market. Located in the centre of town, in an area also called Saturday Market, you’ll find dozens of bustling market stalls selling breads, cheeses, freshly cut flowers, fruit and veg, books, clothing and lots more. Of course, we wouldn’t dream of leaving out your pets and you will of course find a stall selling dog treats too!
After a look around the market, head to Dyer Lane, a little street directly off Saturday Market with independent shops to explore. You’ll find a shop called Oh My Dog! here which, as you might be able to tell from the name, is a haven for dogs. Selling toys, treats and stylish accessories, it’s a great place to spoil your pet.
Mid-morning coffee break
Time to refuel! Head back to Saturday Market and visit Vanessa Delicatessen & Cafe for a cuppa. If you’re feeling peckish at this point, you’re in the right place! Choose a homemade cake or sausage roll to go with your drink and enjoy your break inside (the café is just upstairs) or sit outside in the square if the weather is nice. Both options are dog friendly.
When you’re feeling recharged, take a look in the delicatessen downstairs and pick up some delicious local produce before setting off to explore more of Beverley.
Shopping
You’ll find a great mix of high-street brands and charming independent shops throughout Beverley’s historic streets. From unique boutiques to gift shops, and department stores, there’s plenty of opportunity for some retail therapy and you’ll notice that many shops welcome dogs and many more leave water bowls outside. All this exploring is thirsty work!
From Saturday Market, you can head towards North Bar Within and St Mary’s Arcade or you can wander along Toll Gavel and up towards Wednesday Market, another quaint market square. On Toll Gavel there’s yet another opportunity to spoil your pet at Everything But The Dog. Pick up some new tennis balls, a chew toy, or a cute bandana to finish off your dog’s look. Or for pooches who love a good pampering, why not call ahead and book them in for a full groom?
A short walk from Wednesday Market is Flemingate Shopping Centre, home to a great selection of high street names. Well behaved dogs are welcomed in some of the shops here too, including Starbucks and Art and Soul, which brings together items from a huge range of independent businesses, all under one roof.
Whilst you’re exploring, you’ll notice Beverley’s two beautiful churches dominating the skyline. St Mary’s Church sits on North Bar Within and contains a carving of the March Hare, said to have inspired Lewis Carol’s Alice in Wonderland. Beverley Minster sits at the opposite end of town, just a short walk from Wednesday Market, and is one of Britain’s finest medieval gothic churches. Although neither of the churches allow dogs inside, you can appreciate their beauty from the streets. They’re far too impressive to bypass when you’re in Beverley.
Lunch time
If the weather is nice and you fancy a spot of al fresco eating, Poma in Wednesday Market do lovely sandwiches. And of course, it would be a shame not to sample a scoop of their handmade gelato for dessert! Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating space, but you should be aware that they’re not allowed inside.
If you’d prefer somewhere with inside seating, or plan to wander over to Flemingate Shopping Centre, The Potting Shed is a large, welcoming pub just a short walk away. Find a cosy corner for you and your pup and enjoy a nice leisurely lunch. Sandwiches, pizzas, burgers and kebabs are offered alongside traditional pub favourites, such as steak and ale pie. So whether you’re in the mood for a light bite or a full on feast, you should be pretty happy here.
Saturday afternoon
A stroll along Beverley Beck
Tummies full, it’s time to enjoy a relaxing stroll along Beverley Beck. The Beck is just a 5 minute walk from The Potting Shed and offers a tranquil escape, perfect for unwinding with your dog away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre. Enjoy an amble alongside the historic waterway lined with charming old barges, many of which hint at the area’s rich maritime past.
There are plenty of opportunity for wildlife spotting too, with ducks, swans, and other birds often making an appearance. You can choose to follow the beck for its full length or take one of the connecting routes leading to the wider countryside. For a longer adventure, consider extending your walk towards the River Hull or looping back to Beverley Westwood for even more open space to explore.
