Make the most of the final weeks of summer in East Yorkshire…
With the final weeks of summer upon us, there's still plenty of time to swap the roads for the trails and discover everything the Yorkshire Wolds has to offer. Rolling hills, quiet country lanes, woodland tracks and picturesque villages make this one of the best places to explore on foot before autumn arrives.
First, for those reading this and wondering "who and what is ALTUS Running?" – we're an inclusive community Run Club based in Hull and East Yorkshire, built around bringing people together through running, whether that's on the road, the track or out on the trails.
As part of our ongoing series with Visit East Yorkshire, we're continuing to showcase some of our favourite places to run across the region. This time, we're heading to Beverley - the perfect gateway to the Yorkshire Wolds (in our opinion).
Whether you're visiting East Yorkshire for the weekend, preparing for an upcoming trail race or simply looking to escape the busy roads, Beverley offers the ideal starting point for runners wanting to experience some of East Yorkshire's most beautiful trail routes.
Why we love trail running in Beverley and around East Yorkshire
Beverley offers the best of both worlds… Before your run, you've got one of East Yorkshire's most vibrant market towns, packed with independent cafés, restaurants and historic landmarks. Within minutes of leaving the town centre, however, you're surrounded by open countryside, rolling hills and peaceful trails stretching across the Yorkshire Wolds.
The variety is what makes this area so enjoyable to run. One moment you're weaving through woodland tracks, the next you're climbing towards open fields and views across the surrounding countryside.
Routes around Beverley can be adapted to suit almost any running ability, from shorter social trail runs through to longer endurance runs, making it a great destination whether you're completely new to trail running or training for a specific race or endurance event.
For us as a Run Club, it's another reminder that some of the best running experiences can be found just a short drive from home - and with the summer season beginning to wind-down, now is the perfect time to go discover them.

Our trail run recommendations
Route spotlight – Beverley to the Yorkshire Wolds
Starting in Beverley, there are numerous routes leading out towards the Yorkshire Wolds, combining quiet roads, woodland trails and open countryside throughout.
One of our favourite options heads south-west towards Newbald and the surrounding Wolds, taking in rolling hills, open fields and some of the area's most scenic trail sections before looping back towards Beverley.
Suggested route:
- Distance: Approximately 12–16km (depending on route choice)
- Terrain: Woodland trails, farm tracks and quiet country lanes
- Elevation: Rolling climbs throughout the Yorkshire Wolds
For those wanting to explore further, the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail is also very close to Beverley, offering lots of opportunities to extend your run and discover even more of the surrounding countryside.

Making a day of it
One of the biggest advantages of starting in Beverley is that the run doesn't have to be the only reason for visiting. Late summer is one of the best times to explore the town, with longer daylight hours, quieter trails and plenty of opportunities to make a full day of your visit before autumn arrives.
Once you've finished your miles, wander through the historic market town, visit the independent shops, cafes and restaurants and relax after your work out on the trails.
For anyone travelling into East Yorkshire, Beverley also provides an excellent base for exploring the wider Yorkshire Wolds, making it easy to combine a morning on the trails with an afternoon discovering everything else the area has to offer.

Our go-to post-run spots
No trail run is complete without a proper refuel afterwards – and luckily, Beverley has plenty of options worth visiting. A few of our favourites include:
- Gemini Chocolate (33 N Bar Within, Beverley HU17 8DB)
- A great spot for a post-run coffee, drink and some treats.
- Vanessa Delicatessen & Cafe (21-22 Saturday Market, Beverley HU17 8BB)
- Ideal for a post-run refreshment and food including coffee, sandwiches, and much more.
- Merienda Bakery and Restaurant (The Sessions House, New Walk, Beverley HU17 7AE)
- Perfect for coffee, light breakfasts and lunch.
