Afternoon Tea is a lovely treat, a great way to spend some quality time with loved ones and friends, and a fantastic way to sample some of the fayre by East Yorkshire’s finest makers and bakers. From elegant tearooms, to cosy cafes and takeaway afternoon teas to enjoy, well, wherever you please! With so many fantastic places to try in the area, here are a few to try.

1. Tickton Grange Hotel

A beautiful country hotel, just outside Beverley in the East Yorkshire countryside, Tickton Grange has luxurious rooms to stay in and a lovely restaurant to dine in but one of the things that really stands out is their Afternoon Tea. Served over three tiers, the sweet and savoury treats expertly handmade from Yorkshire produce, along with the finest loose leaf tea in the beautiful fireside setting is an absolute delight. The Georgian style of the building lends itself to plenty of natural light in its sumptuous rooms. And with 16 acres of quintessentially English gardens to stroll in, there’s plenty of space to walk off your afternoon feast.

2. Highfield House

Picture the scene. A beautiful tudor manor house dating back to 1864, set in 8 acres of stunning grounds in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds. Grand dining spaces provide the perfect backdrop for your afternoon tea, skilfully prepared using regional and seasonal ingredients. Dietary requirements are well catered for here too with gluten free, vegetarian, vegan and keto options available. After enjoying a range of sandwiches, scones and cakes, why not take a stroll through the historic woodlands, weirs and grounds which provide an oasis of calm. If you really want to treat yourself, you could even book one of their 10 sumptuous suites and enjoy an overnight stay (providing the perfect excuse to sample more of their accessible fine dining menu)!

3. Marton Manor Farm Shop & Tearooms
For a more rustic feel, Marton Manor Farm shop and Tearooms fits the picture. On the road to Flamborough, the cafe is set in a beautifully converted barn on a working farm, boasting much of the original brickwork and stunning wooden beams. The cafe prides itself in the use of food and ingredients sourced from local producers to create fresh, home baked treats. Afternoon tea in this lovely setting includes all home made bread, scones and cake, with locally sourced meats and cheeses.

4. The Beverley Arms
The Beverley Arms is packed with character, having first opened its doors in 1794. In recent years it has been lovingly restored, preserving historic features whilst offering a contemporary experience. Discover a beautiful pewter bar and lounges leading to an orangery restaurant, plus a large heated outdoor space for eating al fresco. They offer a mouth-watering full afternoon tea experience or if you favour sweet over savoury you can ditch the sandwiches and opt for a cream tea instead (there’s no such thing as too much cake, right)? Being located only a short walk from Beverley Westwood, The Beverley Arms is perfectly placed to stretch your legs and take in the wide open green spaces after your indulgent lunch.

5. The Georgian Tea Rooms
Serving traditional afternoon tea in the traditional part of Bridlington. Along one of the UK's most complete Georgian Streets, High Street, is this quaint little cafe, serving a delightful afternoon tea to be enjoyed inside or outside in their beautiful garden. And if you’d rather savoury over sweet, their cheese or Wold’s ploughman’s including a selection of cheeses, Yorkshire ham and homemade chutney are homely and satisfying.

6. Kitchen Shop & Tearooms
Based in the small market town of Howden, which is well worth a visit, with quaint streets in the centre, and the Minster to wander around. But all that sightseeing is tiring, right? So what better way to re-fuel than with an Afternoon Tea at Kitchen in Howden. At this tearoom, they haven’t heard of portion control, so you’re guaranteed to re-fuel here. Since it’s a deli as well as a tearoom, you can choose to take some of your favourites home with you too.

7. Vanessa’s Delicatessen & Cafe
Vanessa’s in Beverley has developed a reputation for fine food with locals & visitors alike. With a string of awards for their produce, you’re guaranteed foods of excellent quality and range. Watch the world go by from a window seat in the café upstairs, or sit out in the historic market place & enjoy the varied architecture of the square. Choose from a traditional afternoon tea of open sandwiches, scones and sweets, or a savoury afternoon tea which includes half a homemade scotch egg, sausage roll, pork pie and a seared steak sandwich with fried onions, rounded off with a chocolate brownie.

8. Drewtons Farm Shop & Restaurant
This is another of our fine, award-winning food producers, working with over 500 Yorkshire producers to make their tasty bakes. In fine weather, sit on their patio and enjoy the views across the Wolds. If it’s a special Afternoon Tea celebration, such as a birthday, baby-shower or just because, you can book one of their private hire rooms to enjoy, just for you & your guests.

9. The Bell Hotel, Driffield Spa
Afternoon tea and a day in Spa sounds like the perfect way to relax, indulge and spend quality time having a girly afternoon with friends, or catching up with loved ones. Driffield Spa have a range of spa day packages available, which include a lovely afternoon tea. Enjoy the heat and water suite with a pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, treat yourself to a treatment and once you’re thoroughly worn out from a day of relaxing then refuel with an afternoon tea.

10. Old Lamp Room
If you’re looking for somewhere a little unique to enjoy afternoon tea, the Old Lamp Room in Cottingham is a pretty good choice. Of all the eateries on our list, it holds the honour of occupying the most unexpected location – on a train station platform. Originally an old station store room, the building has been transformed by its owners to offer cute, quirky, vintage charm. Small but perfectly formed, it has limited seating so you’ll need to book well ahead if you plan to visit. As well as all the usual tempting treats you’d expect from an afternoon tea, you can enjoy unlimited tea here so sit back, relax and enjoy.
