Wander: Art on the Yorkshire Wolds Way

Art on the Yorkshire Wolds Way in East Yorkshire

WANDER is the first trail of its kind in the country encompassing a series of public art installations on a national trail. WANDER – Art on the Yorkshire Wolds Way creates an evocative attraction comprising landmark art installations along the national walking route plus an additional fitting of creatively crafted benches etched with poetry.

WANDER is inspired by the beautiful and undulating Yorkshire Wolds landscape as David Hockney famously is. Over recent years, Hockney has been prolific in producing artworks featuring the East Yorkshire landscape including the famous Bigger Trees by Warter and his Woldgate Woods series. There are also many art galleries that celebrate East Yorkshire fantastic artists and the countryside that inspired them.

Artworks that complement and enhance the landscape are installed along the 79-mile National Trail - which starts on the banks of the River Humber and finishes on the dramatic Filey Brigg headland - by nationally significant artists. The resulting works of art vary in type and scale and are installed in a variety of beautiful and unusual settings.

A collection of six individually designed benches by artist and furniture maker Angus Ross are etched with site-specific poems composed by John Wedgwood Clark. The benches are made from steam-bent oak and stainless steel, hand crafted to echo the flowing lines and curves of the dry valleys and magical springs of water which 'appear' along the route of the Yorkshire Wolds Way route. The ribbons of wood spring out of the ground and flow with lines of words emerging like water all from one source.

Whether you want to tackle the whole 79 mile route or pick a few points to cover, make sure to pack a picnic to enjoy at one the perfectly placed benches and take in the views.
