Discover the East Yorkshire Coast

The East Yorkshire Coast has three distinct personalities - sweeping golden beaches in traditional resorts such as Hornsea and Withernsea; great for families, the haunting landscape of Spurn and the Humber; a wildlife watchers paradise, and gentle countryside plains with quiet lanes and small market towns like Hedon; perfect for cycling and visiting welcoming pubs for Sunday roasts.

Family favourites

Two award-winning beaches and bucket loads of attractions make Bridlington the ideal choice for family days out and short breaks. Once you’ve had your fill of the white sandy beaches there is more than enough to keep everyone entertained. Catch a thrilling boat ride, visit the award-winning Bridlington Animal Park, hop aboard the land train, tour a rock factory or explore the stunning Sewerby Hall and Gardens and meet the penguins at the zoo!

Hornsea is another great base for a family holiday, with its lovely sandy beach, bustling promenade to stroll along, amusements and plenty of attractions for all the family. It also has the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire, Hornsea Mere, Hornsea Museum and Honeysuckle Farm. Hornsea Freeport outlet village has the best bargains and Bugtopia to keep the kids entertained.

The traditional seaside resort of Withernsea offers a Blue Flag beach of golden sand with its own rather regal castellated entrance, pier Towers, on a mile-long promenade and a rare inland lighthouse, now a museum, situated in the town centre. This family friendly seaside town hosts a programme of events and summer carnivals in the Valley Gardens, a perfect public gardens and outdoor stage space.

Wild wonders

Spurn National Nature Reserve is a unique and iconic place, internationally renowned for its wildlife and heritage. Access is now on foot or by cycle only, paying close attention to any warning signs.  The newly restored Spurn Lighthouse sits within the wildlife haven of Spurn National Nature Reserve. Visitors can make their way along the three-and-a-half-mile peninsula or climb aboard a Spurn Safari Unimog which acts as a mobile wildlife hide offering a different vantage point to visitors wishing to observe the many rare birds that inhabit the area.

A visit to Flamborough Head is called for if you want to witness the East Yorkshire coast at its most wild and untamed. There are plenty of coastal paths to walk, it’s a great spot for bird watching and you might even spot a colony of seals. With two imposing lighthouses close by and Danes Dyke, a scenic nature reserve on your doorstep, there are endless opportunities for exploration.

Bempton Cliffs, near Bridlington, is one of the UK’s top wildlife spectacles - almost half-a-million seabirds soaring above and towering chalk cliffs. During spring you can see guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, herring gulls, fulmars and shags nesting here as well as the largest seabird in the UK, the majestic gannet. And of course we can’t forget everyone's favourite, the puffin!

Whether you choose to pack your walking shoes and binoculars or your factor 50 and bucket and space, there’s an East Yorkshire coast experience for you.
